Oakland on the March Again!
Any changes to the county's growth plan have
been put on hold until the population numbers from the 2010 census are
available. This decision put a temporary halt to Oakland's effort to double its
Urban Growth Area to encompass 10% of the entire county.
Not content to stand idly by waiting on the
census or to fill the time by tending to problems within its city limits,
Oakland has devised another way to overreach into the county. The city fathers
are now seeking "planning authority" over the town's current growth area which
includes substantial portions of Hickory Withe. If Oakland is successful in this
effort, it will have complete control over how subdivisions are built in Hickory
Withe and the rules developers must follow.
However, Oakland will not have responsibility
for the consequences of its planning decisions. Problems that arise in
subdivisions built to "Oakland standards" will be the responsibility of county
government to fix and all county property owners to pay for. |
